I am just a pair of eyes
The smell of summer is in the air. Be it faint and in the clutching hands on old man winter I can feel the warm sun on my face. Summer nights down town in manual focus.

Mike and his boys
A few good men indeed. Just one of the shots from 2009 wedding season. The next wedding for me is about a week away. Free portrait shoot between now and then. Ask me how.

DIY Ring light
What a beautiful day here in Eastern Canada. Cool crisp air, a cloudless sky, and melting snow. I almost forgot how amazing it is to actually feel the sun shining on my face. I'll miss skiing, but not the sidewalk slush, and the wind chill. But, can I really complain? No I can't. Anyway...This is the ring light that I made. I know I mentioned I'd post my own method, but honestly it's not far off from all of the others online. I used diffuser material from an old soft box, and check out the auto assist feature! ie hole. It actually works quite well. It was over thought a little, as my first attempt involved fibre optics but failed miserably. It's true, the simplest solution to a problem is often the best. I'm working on stream lining the design of the ring light adaptor to make it suitable for wedding and event photography, but we'll see. Here is a pic of what I was able to put together. Also check out this link http://strobist.blogspot.com/2007/11/ring-flash-week-intro-and-resources.htm or search google on how to make your own. Cheers.

Kijiji find
I purchased a second hand minolta x700 from kijiji for next to nothing. The lady selling it thought the film advance lever was broken. I actually picked it up with the intent of trying to fix it, but it turns out the batteries were just dead. It works perfectly. To be fair I had no idea what was wrong with it until I paid her and she left the store. Thanks Lady from Kijiji. These are some shots i took with it today using some expired Kodak 400 portrait film we have laying around at the camera store. I also applied the direct positive preset in abobe lightroom.
Upside down with 3D glasses on.
Why do we take photos of ourselves in the mirror? Maybe because of pure vanity, you have no one to take a photo of you (sad but true), or for just for the hell of taking a picture of something. For me it's been a way of testing gear, like a new external flash or lens. Seriously! Sure I make stupid faces, and ham it up. But, why not? I might as well do something if I'm taking my own picture. I like to experiment with light, and get a bit of a high when I see something superbly, or not so superbly, but uniquely lit. I'm not a lightmaster by no means, yet, but when I see a photo that I set up by controlling the light I get a high. Maybe that's strange for some of you, but if you're reading a photography blog, then you probably know what I'm talking about. It's a feeling of excitement, hope, and foresight. Foresight because once I take the photo, I'm like "ok now what more can I do with this? Then lightroom comes into play, my other obsession. More on that later. I'm a compulsive "do it yourselfer". It's funny, I actually take a lot of pride in teaching myself, fixing something, or making something work. I recently spent hours repairing a couple prime lenses. It's a sense of accomplishment that comes from within. No one can take credit for teaching yourself, or doing something that has been brought on by your own initiative except you. What does this have to do with taking photos in the mirror? Sure I could set up the tri-pod, set the self-timer, then be a goof ball in front of the camera, but that's way to much hassle, and I like clicking the shutter. Take your own photo. C'mon, ham it up :) Maybe even upside down with 3D glasses on.

Best Caesar ever
I never thought bacon and chicken cooked in the same pan could help produce something so delicious. Here's to you meat farmers for making my greens mouth watering. Sorry vegans.

Ring light of fire
This is one of my first shots using a diy ring light of my lovely girlfriend. I used a minolta 28mm at f2.8 to create a shallow depth of field and to showoff the catch light in her eyes. I think the light is evenly distributed, skin looks milky, and I'd never believe she just came off a 8hr nursing shift! Wanna know how I did it? Find a do it yourself guide to building your own ring light on my blog in the next few days. Cheers!

GQ Irish Setter
I'm house sitting for my parents, and thought it would be a good opportunity to practice my pet portrait skills. Shot using bounce flash, sony a200, and a minolta 50mm 1.7 I think Spencer, an irish setter, has a little GQ model thing going on. Very defined spen boy!....well minus the drool on his mouth :P They have four animals, two dogs and two cats and I think I'll do their portraits too. I'm working on a "do it yourself" ring flash, and I think it will be a good opportunity to test it out. Well back to work...

breakfast as a first blog.
I woke up this morning to the soft sounds of my lovely girlfriend whispering a key to any good man's heart "wake up honey, I'm treating you to breakfast". A hot shower later and we were at a nice little restaurant that serves "all day" breakfast. Traditional bacon and eggs for me, while Amanda went for the club sandwich. She's always been more of a lunch girl. I think it's the pop. And, for most of us that's just wrong with bacon and eggs! It's just one of the things I love about her. But, coffee all the way for me. Discussion of the pros and cons of moving to the west coast and hypothetical "would you rather questions" took care of meal time conversation while i downed my hearty plate of over-easy eggs, bacon and a few fries from across the table. Still weighing the west coast options...
Ok, first blog done. Actual photography related stuff to come. Home studio set up, inside a prime lens, diy ring light construction, wedding photography, and what ever else I happen to come up with. Cheers!
